From Ruin to Rainforest Legacy

The Forest Research Institute Malaysia Forest Park Selangor (FRIM FPS), located in Kepong, Selangor, represents one of the world’s earliest and most successful examples of large-scale tropical rainforest restoration. Established in the 1920s on land severely degraded by tin mining, the site transformed barren terrain into a mature and biodiverse lowland tropical rainforest through systematic scientific reforestation efforts.

The site was recognised as a cultural landscape and a landmark achievement in ecological restoration. FRIM FPS demonstrates pioneering forestry science and sustainable land rehabilitation practices at a time when deforestation was widespread globally. The park integrates research facilities, arboreta, experimental plots, recreational gardens, water bodies, and forest trails within a recreated rainforest ecosystem that closely resembles a natural tropical forest in both structure and biodiversity.
